Best Fargo-Moorhead Areas for Families: A Local Guide

by Joseph Haj

Fargo-Moorhead is a great place to raise a family, but each community has a different feel. Here is how I describe the four markets I work in to families who are moving or upsizing.

Fargo

Best for: the widest choice of homes and price points.

North Fargo offers established neighborhoods near NDSU and downtown, with mature trees and older homes. South Fargo has much of the city’s newer construction, close to shopping, Scheels Arena, and big parks. Most of Fargo is served by Fargo Public Schools, though some edges fall in other districts, so always check the address.

West Fargo

Best for: newer homes and a fast-growing community.

West Fargo has grown quickly, with newer subdivisions, The Lights development and its plaza concerts, and Bonanzaville. West Fargo Public Schools covers the city and surrounding areas.

Horace

Best for: new construction with a small-town feel.

Horace sits just southwest of Fargo and has seen a lot of new building. Horace High School opened in 2021, part of the West Fargo Public Schools system.

Moorhead

Best for: buyers who want Minnesota-side living close to downtown Fargo.

Moorhead is home to Concordia College and Minnesota State University Moorhead, the Hjemkomst Center, and Bluestem Amphitheater. Minnesota and North Dakota taxes differ, so compare total costs, not just prices.

What Families Should Check Before Buying

  • School boundaries for the exact address
  • Commute at the times you actually drive
  • Parks and trails within walking distance
  • Specials and assessments on newer lots
  • Flood zone status and insurance requirements
